How is the amygdala different from the cerebral cortex?
The amygdala in children is relatively well developed, whereas the cerebral cortical connections are less so. Amygdala is concerned with generation of emotions, whereas adult cortex can consciously suppress such emotions.
How is the amygdala involved in affective disorders?
In the affective disorders amygdala involvement is reflected by autonomic symptoms (anxiety, tension, agitation), but also with the patient's altered emotional evaluation of the environment, which is typically laden with negative affect, unpleasant memories, and pervading pessimism.
Why are amygdala and hippocampus considered subcortical structures?
We further limit our review to the neural development of two subcortical structures: the hippocampus and amygdala. We focus on these two regions because, based on a large adult human and non-human animal literature, we would expect significant environmental influence on these structures.
Is there a review of adversity, the amygdala and the hippocampus?
A paper by Raizada & Kishiyama (this issue) reviews the literature on cognitive deprivation (e.g., low socio-economic status of the family), and therefore, this manuscript will not focus on early adversity of that type. We further limit our review to the neural development of two subcortical structures: the hippocampus and amygdala.
