Format for a canadian phd thesis

Note 1: These templates are intended for students starting to prepare their thesis. If you have already written your thesis without the templates, follow the formatting outlined in the General Forms of Theses (99 KB) to ensure proper formatting instead of using the templates.

A manuscript-based doctoral thesis must include the text of a minimum of two manuscripts published, submitted or to be submitted for publication. Articles must be formatted according to the requirements described below. A manuscript-based Master’s thesis must include the text of one or more manuscripts.

While there is no prescribed format for a thesis at the University of Calgary, most take the form of a “traditional” thesis, a “manuscript-based” thesis, or hybrid of the two. While both formats need introduction and conclusion chapters, the body of the text will vary. The main differences between each have been outlined below.

The University of Manitoba requires that all theses and practica reasonably conform to the following specifications. Select a standard style manual recommended by your department. Always use the latest edition available. If there is a conflict between these UM instructions and the style manual chosen, follow the UM instructions.
